You have NO IDEA how jealous I am of your ability to write in isolation, Robert. I had to stop writing completely three weeks ago due to the fact that my real life was demanding my attention and I just had to get my head back in that game.

No sympathy whatsoever. None.

Thanks for posting this. It’s one of my pet peeves! I see this mistake everywhere from newspapers to my shampoo bottle.

Yeah, even Open Office 2.4 could and I think (but not sure) that 3.0 can write them. Also, Gnumeric Spreadsheet can open .xlsx and runs faster than Open Office. It can’t save them, though.

I hadn’t mention those here since that would be a whole separate post!

Glad it was helpful. This has come up in my writing group a bunch of times too. Eventually, I guess everyone will have the new version so it won’t be a problem any more.

Thanks, Rob! I have run into this problem and the instructions for setting .doc as the default format in Word 2007 was very useful for me.

Oh, my gosh, I would just curl up and die if someone asked me that, Rob! You definitely have come a long way since then, because just this morning I was telling someone how technically astute you are.

This is a great article. I haven’t joined a group yet because I don’t think I’m ready for it. What I’m mainly afraid of is being around a bunch of cynics who don’t like anything anyone else does, and who are obsessed with beating the publishing game. Writer who write as a business, rather than for the love of the craft.

It sounds like you have a great group, and I know you’ve been instrumental in getting it going, so – Kudos!
